Picasa

What is Picasa?

Picasa is a free application that helps you instantly share, edit and organize all of your pictures on your PC or MAC computer.  It automatically locates all of your pictures and sorts them into visual albums.  Picasa also makes advanced photo editing effortless.  You can simply email photos, print photos, post them to your blog, and make cool slideshows!  The new Web Albums feature allows you to upload your photos to the web with just one click.

Why use it?

Students can use Picasa to:

  • Organize and manage photos for projects and reports

  • Swiftly edit photos with a touch of a button

  • Share photos of special events with friends and family

  • Create slideshows, timelines, and photo collages

  • Create web albums for students to access at home

  • Burn photos, movies and slideshows on CD

  • Upload movies to YouTube

Instructional Ideas

Have your students use Picasa for its ease of use. Picasa will automatically search the computer for all images and put them in folders. On the other hand, the students can search for a specific topical image in all the folders such as all pictures saved with “experiment” in the file name or folder. The students can create albums to keep classroom projects organized. They can do “basic” photo editing with ease.

Elementary

Take pictures of student work, presentations, or field trips throughout the year and quickly turn them into a slideshow that you can play at Open House or during parent conferences.

Middle School

Students can create a historical photo album by taking pictures of themselves in historical costumes and settings. Then apply sepia tones or black & white effects to make them look like old photos and print them out.

High School

Journalism students can keep all photos for each edition of their newspaper or magazine in one location on their classroom PC, adding descriptions and captions that make them easy to find, re-use, and share.

- Have kids take lesson related photos: post them to their web albums, and present oral reports.

Testimonial from a Teacher

"As an instructional technology resource teacher, I train my teachers to use technology with their students. One program we have used is Picasa. I have found that it's a great beginning photo-editing program," said Amber Price, a teacher in the Suffolk Public Schools in Suffolk, Va. "Using Picasa, my students have created slideshows from scratch at the click of a button, created timelines and picture collages of famous Americans, and they have learned how to crop, edit, and add effects to photos they have taken with the digital camera. Students can also create an instant web page with their photos, and with the Picasa upgrade students can create a web album of photos."
